Member Duties : Esperanza has a total of 4 AmeriCorps College Guide positions available that candidates will be considered. Applicants will be considered for both positions and if qualified, specific placement will be discussed during an interview.

Two (2) College Guide positions will be responsible for the following:

  • Delivery of both the AmeriCorps College Guide and Esperanza’s Lideres Avanzando Curricula.
  • Ensure that all students achieve the AmeriCorps College Guide and Esperanza Lideres Avanzando outcomes. 
  • Promote and market programming to college Freshman/Sophomore students, College Advisors and supporting campus resource groups and guidance counselors in the target colleges/universities.
  • Recruit and retain participants.
  • Collaborate and communicate with external partners and resources to bring in guest facilitators on specific topics.
  • Facilitate nine workshops supporting students in their Freshman/Sophomore year of college and follow-up on workshop assignments.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date program records and databases and provide regular reporting to the Manager of Post-Secondary initiatives.
  • Monitor academic and behavioral progress of students enrolled in Lideres Avanzando program.
  • Recruit adult Mentors for college students and aid in follow-up on mentoring relationships and progress.
  • Maintain updated data and tracking on mentoring matches with regular monthly reporting.
  • Assist with related Internship Program efforts.
  • Attend meetings to expand relationships in the community with Manager of Post-Secondary Initiatives.
  • Assist with case management of students enrolled in post-secondary programs
  • Assist with monitoring of scholarships program
  • Assist with recruitment of students for scholarships program in community high schools
  • Present Esperanza programs in the community

Two (2) College Guide positions will be responsible for the following:

  • Promotes and markets Esperanza Programming to parents and students, school principals, teachers, and guidance counselors in the target schools to seek referrals from teachers and parents of students who could benefit from the program and services offered by Esperanza.
  • Regularly recruit program participants and maintain current participants.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other Esperanza program coordinators and staff to ensure a comprehensive approach that will strength Esperanza impact in the community.
  • Develop and run weekly Hispanic Youth Leadership program (HYLP) aimed at providing students with activities that promote their academic development in a fun, creative, and dynamic venue.
  • Assist with the enrollment of students in our mentoring program.
  • Assist students with transition from high school to college or career programs.
  • Implement the HYLP curriculum.
  • Monitor academic and behavioral progress of students enrolled in Esperanza programs.
  • Maintains and provides regular reporting as needed by Esperanza, the schools, and funders of the program.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date program records and databases.
  • Plan and coordinate a weekly in-school tutoring program.
  • Attend community events to promote the program.

Service Description : Make a real impact on the lives of Ohio students and their surrounding community - become an Ohio College Guide AmeriCorps member and serve as an advisor, mentoring and guiding typically underserved Ohioans- first generation college-going, low-income, and minority – in getting the information and knowledge they need and deserve to prepare for, access and complete a postsecondary credential. The College Guides deliver programs and counseling on college and career exploration and financial education to 6th through 12th graders; provide support to 11th and 12th graders on strategic and tactile postsecondary access and financial planning; and facilitate successful postsecondary transitions, persistence and ongoing financial education with high school graduates. Develop advising, mentoring, interpersonal, and leadership skills. This position is a full-time commitment of 1,700 service hours to be completed in 11 months, starting in August 2021. College Guides will receive a modest living allowance up to $16,000 or $727.28 per pay before taxes, and an education award up to $6,345 upon completion of service. Additionally, existing qualified student loans are deferred during time of service and accrued interest may be eligible to be paid by the Corporation of National and Community Service. The AmeriCorps Ohio College Guides receive ongoing skills training, and professional development opportunities. Host sites for the 2021-2022 Ohio College Guides program are: Canton (Stark Education Partnership); Cleveland (College Now Greater Cleveland & Esperanza Inc.); Columbus (I Know I Can); Oberlin (Ninde Scholars Program), Warren (Mahoning Valley CAP); and Zanesville (Scholarship Central).
