1 in 5 adults in Houston is considered functionally illiterate, unable to manage daily activities and employment tasks that require reading skills beyond a basic level in any language. Be a catalyst for change and address adults' literacy needs across Houston, serving as community educators and instructors. The Texas Family Literacy Initiative is a part of the AmeriCorps network of state and national service programs that engages 80,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in communities throughout the nation. Become an AmeriCorps member and serve within one of the following areas:

  • Teach or tutor adults in English as a Second Language
  • Teach classes or tutor adults in Adult Basic Education or High School Equivalency Preparation
  • Provide Workforce Literacy for adults seeking to improve their employment & careers

Qualified applicants will serve as full time instructors or job coaches with well-established local adult education organizations throughout Houston. This is an 11-month position in which they complete 1700 hours of service from August 16th 2021-July 15th 2022. In exchange for their service, members receive the following benefits:  

  • Federal Student Loan Forbearance or Deferment
  • $6,345 Education Award
  • Health Insurance
  • Bi-weekly Living Allowance
  • Professional Teaching and Nonprofit Experience
  • Ongoing Leadership and Professional Development
  • Direct Service Experience at a Community-based Literacy Program
  • Networking Opportunities


We are looking for candidates with 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Experience or interest in education 
  • Experience or interest in working with diverse populations 
  • A service-oriented mindset 
  • A desire to for professional development and networking opportunities
