Internship Coordinator

We are looking for a self-motivated Internship Coordinator with a talent for organization to build and manage an exciting new internship program here at the Southeast Chamber of Commerce! This program is designed to hire local college and graduate students on an on-going basis for paid part-time jobs while they are still in school. These students will have the opportunity to work in different areas of the Chamber’s work, supporting the work that our team is doing and learning tangible skills to help with their future career. As the Internship Coordinator, you will work closely with interns to help them be successful and help us leverage existing and new talent to the Calumet Heights and Avalon Park area.

SCCC is an exciting organization to work with--check out their Instagram for examples of the slick placemaking work they’ve been doing since 2017. Staff guide their work and themselves with an open-minded and positive growth attitude. Additionally, the CHAP area is poised for major redevelopment from Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Invest in South/West initiative. By managing and mentoring SCCC interns, you will help the organization and the area grow.

Internships will be available in the following areas:

  • Volunteer and board management
  • Mural project coordinator
  • Digital media (website, social media, e-newsletter)
  • Partnerships coordinator
  • Business counseling coordinator

In the first few months of this position, you will help to hire and fill the intern roles. You will also work with the Executive Director and the Program Manager to orient the interns to the organization and area. Moving forward, you will act as a liaison between the interns and SCCC staff to delegate and distribute work appropriately amongst the intern roles. This position is estimated to require part-time hours, though you’d be welcome to devote more hours if you want to.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Develop intern job descriptions, orientation materials, program description, internship manual, promotional materials, and other program documents, revising as needed to stay relevant.
  • Post and manage intern job postings in a variety of locations to attract students with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and skill sets appropriate for the roles.
  • Develop partnerships with local graduate programs, community colleges, libraries, and other institutions to facilitate the long-term success of the internship program.
  • Bring interns on board with orientation materials and required paperwork.
  • For interns working to achieve academic credit, work with them to complete required paperwork and credit requirements.
  • Develop management and communication systems for smooth communication and task management between and among SCCC staff and interns.
  • Assist in marketing the internship program by developing appropriate materials as well as advertising at community and special events.
  • Assist with production of program materials and informational publications.
  • Work with interns and SCCC staff to determine appropriate working schedules and other arrangements for interns.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills, especially for remote working conditions.
  • Must have superior interpersonal skills with a demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Must be committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside the workplace.
  • Access to computer and software needed for work.
  • Ability to research and quickly develop knowledge of intern recruiting strategies and program management.
  • Excellent aptitude for technology including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Google Suite, spreadsheets, social media, virtual meetings, and graphic design (Canva, Adobe, or other).
  • Must be a self-starter and possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and work independently as a leader and as part of a team.
  • Ability to respect confidentiality and ethical boundaries with regard to guidelines, supervision, and professional consultation.
  • Ability to professionally respond and resolve common inquiries and/or complaints from students, staff, board, or community regarding internship program.
