Food Security Advocate

Summer 2023-Summer 2024, full-time

Please note: this is an AmeriCorps position; somewhere in-between a job and a volunteer opportunity, but not fully either. VISTA members are paid a living allowance of $17,600 and can receive either an education award (to be used on tuition or qualitied loans) of $6,495 OR an end of service stipend of $1500.

This VISTA will have a lead role in resource development efforts to support healthy futures through the Broome County Council of Church’s efforts to eliminate food insecurity working with the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW) and our non-profit grocery store the Greater Good Grocery (GGG). There will also be a focus on ensuring older adults  have access to appropriate foods through Chop-n Chat classes held in Broome County.

The FoodSecurity Adovate’s efforts will focus on:

1. Collaboration/Working side-by-side with program directors’ in all phases of food sourcing and navigation to support and grow the Council’s food focused programming.
2. The creation and distribution of written appeals, newsletters and grants to provide education and financial support for programming. 
3. Assisting with the recruitment , orientation and supervision of volunteers to support the Council’s food-focused work in Broome County.

A college education is preferred but not required. Candidates must also satisfy the National Criminal History Check.
