Position Details

Position Type: Part-time Volunteer (8-10 hours per week)

Number of Positions: 1

Location: Though the position is remote, applicants who are local to the organization's target area (Washington, DC)  are preferred. 

About the Position

We are looking for a long-term volunteer  who is dependable, reliable, and has flexibility with their schedule.  You should have a passion for working with underserved communities and be willing to learn about DC’s ward 7 and 8 communities. The administrative and project assistant  supports project teams both as a member of the team and as an assistant to the executive director. They will perform basic design and technical tasks as well as administrative tasks. Applicants should be eager to learn, highly organized and willing to contribute creatively to the growth and development of the organization. Applicants pursuing an architecture license will have the opportunity to earn AXP credits under experience setting O.

Qualifications & Experience 

  • Knowledge of architectural software such as Revit, AutoCAD and 3D modeling preferred
  • Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup and InDesign graphic software preferred
  • Proficiency in Google Suite preferred
  • Knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines
  • Knowledge of building codes
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing
  • Volunteer experience: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Local to the DC, Maryland or Virginia area (Preferred)
  • Familiarity with social media outlets 


Duties will include:

  • Compiling and distributing a monthly newsletter to the organization’s listserv. 
  • Preparing social media post (Instagram and LinkedIn)
  • Assistance on community projects (zoning & building code research, architectural drafting and rendering, etc.)


About the River East Design Center 

The River East Design Center is a non profit community design center that provides architectural services to neighborhood and community groups serving DC’s ward 7 and 8.  We are a group of designers that live and/or work in the northeast and southeast neighborhoods of Washington, DC. We believe in the power of the collective voice and we know communities have the ability to shape and influence their own environments. We offer our services to make this happen!
