Sawhorse Revolution Board of Directors

BOARD OF DIRECTORS - POSITION DESCRIPTION

Sawhorse Revolution is an established but small non-profit with significant potential to expand its impact in the coming years.

Sawhorse was started as a way to provide meaningful out of school learning opportunities for young people, aiming to offer personal development benefits and career pathways that are currently lacking in the public education system. We are the only organization in our region offering free-of-cost, holistic carpentry and design programs to some of the most vulnerable and diverse youth in the city. Our model is simple, but potent; youth work with professional mentors in carpentry and design to create needed community projects. To date, Sawhorse students have built 57 structures, partnered with 100+ community groups, and Sawhorse has served over 800 youth in Central and South Seattle. The structures we build with our students stand as testaments to the long-term benefit of our programs; these projects can be anything from a tree house 30’ in the forest canopy, to a series of 25+ tiny homes for the homeless placed in city-sanctioned encampments, to a 225 sq. ft social justice lending library.

Sawhorse Revolution has a proven model that needs board support in the form of leadership, creative input, and fundraising. We are seeking board members that can drive Sawhorse Revolution to meet its full potential to provide life-changing design/build programs for young people. This is a volunteer position.

The board provides:

• Organizational strategy and financial oversight

• Governing direction in collaboration with the Executive Director

• Input on program design responding to evolving community needs

• Marketing support and outreach

• Fundraising support and/or resources to sustain and grow our mission

• Specialized expertise (such as legal, financial, human resources, non-profit management, etc) to sustain and grow our mission

Sawhorse board member position description:

• Provide fiduciary oversight

• Devote three-to-ten hours per month related to board work including a monthly meeting, break out meetings, and fundraising events

• Use your network and resources to benefit Sawhorse students by developing new supporters, spreading the word about our work, eliciting help for strategic projects, etc.

• Make a significant annual financial gift; “significant” means one of the three largest annual donations that you make to a non-profit. We do not have a set “give or get” dollar figure

• As an organization that focuses our effort on marginalized youth, we expect all board members to commit to developing their understanding of social justice and equity. We accept everyone where they are and strive for all of us to grow

Skills/Experience Desired:

• Leadership

• Non-Profit Management or Finances*

• Lived experiences that reflect our students or communities

• Professional experience in the building trades

• Education/Teaching background

• Ability to activate a fundraising base
