Thank you for taking the time to contribute to our community. Before you volunteer with us here are some important things to know about Sankofa CDC.

WHO WE ARE

Sankofa CDC is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that approaches health-centered development practices as we build a model for community revitalization for under-resourced low socioeconomic communities. Our neighborhood of focus is the Lower Ninth Ward area of New Orleans. We believe health to be the cornerstone of a thriving community and following foundational principles of community development to create opportunities for increased safety, stability, and overall viability.

WHAT WE DO

We work with residents, community stakeholders, and partners to identify locally-felt social challenges and address them in thoughtful, culturally-competent ways. We understand the power of the built environment in shaping health and therefore partner with other traditional community development organizations and nonprofits to address the “social determinants of health” that trigger inequities. For us, the ultimate goal is to support the creation of a local environment that promotes positive health outcomes and builds healthier communities for generations to come. We transform blighted land into wetland eco-parks that improve stormwater management; build market and wellness center facilities; lead programs on chronic disease prevention education; lead healthy food distribution work.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

“Sankofa works to build healthier communities for generations to come.”

OUR VISION STATEMENT

“A world where health and well-being are accessible to all.”

OUR PROGRAMS

Sankofa Lower Nine Food Pantry

Volunteers assist with pantry operations by unloading our weekly delivery from Second Harvest Food Bank, packing pantry boxes for clients, delivering pantry boxes to homebound clients, and helping to maintain a clean and organized pantry. Volunteers may also assist with helping clients register for the pantry, notifying them of delivery, or reminding them to pick up their food boxes. We are grateful for the volunteers who make this work easier!

Wetland Park & Nature Trail

Volunteers will help with the maintenance of the Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail by helping staff with trail maintenance, weeding, removing invasive plants, and planting trees and other native plants. The efforts of volunteers greatly increase Sankofa’s ability to provide a rich wetland habitat where wildlife can thrive and a beautiful natural setting for the community to enjoy.

OUR VOLUNTEERS

By volunteering with us, you are joining a committed team of individuals who bring diverse skills, experiences, and backgrounds that seek to answer the call of the community. Volunteers are our greatest asset because you are a direct line of communication to the community. Each of us are leaders in our own way and by working together we can achieve the mission set forth by Sankofa CDC.

Thank you for your commitment and we look forward to working alongside you!
