Are you passionate about helping others going through difficult times? Do you consider yourself to be a good listener? Response is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the phone or online chat. No experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow and the ability to make a one-year commitment of four hours a week is required. Training for all programs include lecture, role-playing exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is provided for those attending undergraduate four year colleges. We are always looking for counselor bilingual in Spanish and English.
Over 45 years ago, in recognition of the need for people in crisis to have access to empathetic human contact any time day or night, Response Crisis Center was born. From these seeds of compassion grew a professional, nationally accredited organization, serving thousands of people each year through our 24 hour counseling services, support line services, online crisis counseling services, and community education and training programs.
The crisis intervention/suicide prevention hotline and online chat programs is open every day of the year, day and night, including holidays. Professionally trained and supervised volunteer counselors offer callers telephone support and online chat support and help them to explore options that can lead to thinking through next steps. This counseling helps callers and online chat users lower their anxiety and find their own solutions. Crisis counselors also provide referrals for support groups, clinicians, mental health clinics, other hotlines and a host of other community programs and services.
BECOMING A CRISIS COUNSELOR AT RESPONSE
Volunteer Crisis Counselors provide callers and online chat users in crisis or in need of support with acceptance, compassion and respect in order to lower anxiety and facilitate their innate coping skills. They help callers/online chat users capitalize on their strengths in the prevention of self destructive behaviors or suicide and provide referrals and information about community programs and resources.
Response volunteer crisis counselor training consist of two parts. Part I of our training consists of approximately 12 hours of presentations and skill-building activities. We will be having Part I of training remotely through either Zoom or Microsoft Teams in October, so it will be broken up weekly into two-hour workshops per week. We are offering two options, one on weekdays and one on weekends. Our weekday workshops will be held from 2:30pm-4:30 pm, on Monday, October 5th; Tuesday, October 13th; Monday, October 19th; & Monday, October 26th . However, we also will be having a weekend training option for those who are not able to attend those above dates. The proposed dates would be Saturday, October 3, Saturday, October 10; Saturday, October 17th, & Saturday, October 24th from 10AM-12 PM.
Please be aware that if you are selected to continue with Part II of Response's training, you will be paired with an office trainer for approximately ten weeks during which you will receive hands-on experience and training on a hotline training shift of 4 hours a week, which will be done remotely. During this period, there also will be two hour workshops held via Zoom or Microsoft Teams weekly that compliment trainees' learning on the lines. After completing classroom & office training, we ask for a year's commitment of one four-hour shift per week. We will not provide our address unless prospective volunteers have been accepted into Part II. Please our office is located in Suffolk County, NY and for those who wish to volunteer in the office when we are able to re-open to counselors, all volunteers must have reliable transportation. However, due to the pandemic, there also is the option to work remotely from home temporarily as well until the office fully reopens.
Those interested in attending the upcoming training can register now to reserve their spot by completing the online volunteer application, which can be found here: www.responsecrisiscenter.org/volunteer. Registration is pending until an application is complete and verification is conducted.
