San Francisco Civic Music Association’s Board is responsible for the day to day business of the Association, strategic direction and planning, financial oversight, fund raising, and everything in between. Board members are asked to show a strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the organization, as well as have experience, skills, and resources that help the organization execute its adopted strategy.

As a Board member, you will serve a two year term and are required to attend at least ⅔ of the regular and special meetings of the Board. Currently, our expected workload is two to five hours per week.

Operations

We accomplish much of the day to day logistical work of the organization through committees. Committees are, ideally, led by a board member and staffed by volunteers. They are as follows:

Governance Committee

Responsible for contract personnel, hiring musical talent, and ongoing evaluation and effectiveness of the board and organization. This committee is only staffed by board members.

Performance Committee

Responsible for day-to-day operation of the performing groups.

Membership Committee

Responsible for membership recruitment and retention.

Finance Committee

Responsible for the financial management and operations of the organization.

Fund Development & Marketing Committee

Responsible for fund development and marketing strategy.

Gala Subcommittee

Responsible for planning and execution of the annual fundraising event.

IT Committee

Responsible for website and technology management.

Governance

Collectively, board members help steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies. Board members will help ensure the Association can achieve its mission through active oversight.

  • Attend board meetings as an active and prepared participant.
  • Participate in and lead committees as needed.
  • Evaluate and approve the vision, mission, goals, and strategic of the Association.
  • Understand and exercise appropriate fiduciary oversight of the Association, being mindful of effective governance for non-profit organizations.
  • Monitor the Association’s finances, budget, programs, policies and procedures, and financial/resource needs.
  • Approve and monitor the annual budget and approve the annual Form 990 tax filing.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all internal matters of the Association.
