Critical Exposure is seeking volunteers to join our Board of Directors who are passionate about our work and the youth we engage.

ABOUT CRITICAL EXPOSURE

Critical Exposure (CE) is a DC-based nonprofit organization that trains DC youth to harness the power of photography and their own voices to fight for educational equity and social justice.

Since our founding in 2004, CE has worked with more than 2,800 Black and Brown youth so they can (1) build their skills, knowledge, and confidence in youth organizing and photography; (2) shape narratives about them and their communities; and (3) drive concrete changes in school environments by supporting youth-led campaigns that work towards education equity and close the opportunity gap.

BOARD OVERVIEW and BOARD MEMBER COMMITMENTS

CE’s Board of Directors is a volunteer team responsible for steering the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as by making sure that CE has the adequate resources to advance our mission.

Board members can expect to spend an average of four (4) hours/month fulfilling Board responsibilities. In 2021, we are recruiting at least three new Board members who can actively commit to the responsibilities listed below:

● Attend quarterly Board meetings (3-4 hours long, in-person when conditions permit) and important ad-hoc Board meetings (typically 2-3 shorter virtual meetings per year) ● Join at least one standing Board committee: Board Development, Executive Committee, Finance & Budgeting, and Fundraising & Donor Engagement

● Volunteer for at least one active leadership role (roughly 2-3 hours/month) outside of scheduled Board or committee meetings (e.g., leading a committee or major committee deliverable, Host Committee for fundraising events, etc.)

● Participate in CE’s fiscal monitoring and management, including careful review of quarterly/annual financial statements, audit reports, and tax filings as required by law. ● Accept ad-hoc assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time, and proactively communicate when unable to complete them

● Stay informed about committee matters, prepare themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports.

● Demonstrate active curiosity about CE’s work, programs, and the communities we engage ● Build respectful, collegial working relationships with other Board members and CE staff that contribute to seeking consensus, where possible

● Respond to communication from CE staff and Board members within 48 hours, when possible ● Make CE one of your top two annual charitable donations, with the amount agreed upon with the Board Chair. There is no minimum amount.

● Commit to an annual personal “give/get” fundraising pledge, developed in partnership with the Board Chair and Development and Communications Director

● Attend CE events and seed opportunities to promote CE’s work within your networks ● Represent the organization in a positive and supportive manner at events we host or those hosted by other leaders in the community

Following a recent Board assessment, we are specifically interested in finding potential Board members who would bring some of the following identities, skills, and experiences to CE’s Board of Directors:

● Age 19-34

● Non-binary

● Has lived in DC as a youth

● Teaching or working in DC schools

● Accounting/financial management experience (ideally with a strong understanding of nonprofit financial management)

● Attorney with nonprofit legal experience/expertise

● Has connections in cultural arts communities, particularly in photography

● Skilled in strategic planning/thinking
