Creating the Just and Beautiful City: Powering Data and People to Accelerate Neighborhood Revitalization

ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND

Housing and Neighborhood Development Services, Inc. (HANDS) is a 34-year-old nonprofit known in the community development field as an innovator in resident-driven neighborhood revitalization.  We work in Orange, NJ and nearby towns to amplify the underappreciated strengths of income- constrained residents and organizations. Our goal is to help them build up and sustain healthy neighborhoods that provide economic, educational and cultural opportunities and outcomes rivaling those found in more affluent communities.

We work toward our vision by building safe and healthy affordable housing for residents and affordable commercial space for entrepreneurs and small businesses. We bolster our economic development activity with innovative community empowerment initiatives that seek to inspire neighbors to cultivate their inherent assets to help build a just and beautiful city.

To achieve that vision in these times, HANDS recognizes that we must confront a driving force behind an array of interconnected impediments to revitalization: the huge and growing disparity in wealth and income between residents of cities like Orange and residents of more affluent towns. We are linking our longstanding commitment to addressing the lack of decent affordable housing with new efforts on the economic development front to build personal, family and neighborhood income and wealth in the neighborhoods we serve. The task before us is to empower business owners, homeowners and everyday residents to take control of their financial future. We are launching programs to aid small businesses with training and access to capital, assist homeowners to maintain and enhance their largest asset, and help individuals and families to increase their capability to accumulate savings and direct their financial future. Our VISTA fellow will help us accelerate the impact of these initiatives by building our capacity to use data to execute smart team-based projects and enhance organizational effectiveness.

DUTIES: To better address the increasingly complex challenges facing the communities we serve, HANDS seeks to embed data-driven decision making into the way we operate as an organization.  Pairing smart information management with smart project management will allow our small, diverse staff to work as a team to achieve personal and organizational goals.

We seek a candidate to empower our staff to become competent using data to design, develop and implement team-based projects. The successful candidate will be skilled in data management and be interested in equity-generating organizational development. Candidates should be able to help build a coherent information management system, establish protocols that align the system with project management practices, and support staff to maximize their community impact.  Most important, the successful candidate will be able to coach staff members to sustain these organizational practices after the assignment has ended. REMOTE START LIKELY but ability to work from the organization's office in Orange, NJ is a requirement.
