Every year, 27% of children in the child  welfare system age out. Without consistent  support, many of these youth end up  homeless, which is why Children in  Placement, Connecticut Inc. established  Youth Sponsor volunteer opportunities.  

As a Youth Sponsor, you will work with young  adults between 13 and 24 years of age who  have been in foster care without a permanent  placement, have had multiple placements,  are aging out/close to aging out, or for whom  adoption is no longer wanted or a viable  choice. Youth Sponsors are caring individuals  who help young adults by: 

• Focusing on positive development,  youth driven activities, and developing  core competencies 

• Serving as a connection to other  clinical and support services 

• Acting as a positive role model 

• Ensuring the youth’s needs are being  met 

• Being a positive and consistent support  system in the youth’s life


Youth Sponsor Requirements and  Expectations: 

• Complete application process and  background check 

• Complete 40-hour pre-service training

• Have regular access to a car 

• Be 21 years or older 

• Have basic computer skills 

• Maintain strict confidentiality 

• Participate in in-service training 

• Update Regional Manager monthly or  as significant events occur


Responsibilities:

  • Make a commitment to let the youth drive/own the relationship in terms of wanting to interact, communicate, etc. It is the sponsor’s responsibility to guide, nudge and share options.
  • Keep discussions with youth confidential (except with youth’s safety or well-being are at risk).
  • Notify staff if you are having difficulty with the relationship.
  • Attend orientation and training sessions.
  • Meet with youth on a regular basis to establish a relationship and set goals.
  • Assist youth in working on goals, and offer opinion/options.
  • Keep logs and other information as requested; submit logs on a monthly basis.
  • Notify Coordinator of changes in employment, address, phone number of sponsor or youth.
