The Makuyu Education Centre is a children's home in the Makuyu, Kenya, committed to providing a home to underprivileged children.
We invite volunteers to join us in our mission. Volunteers arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), Nairobi, Kenya, where they will be picked up by a designated driver. The driver will take them to the children’s home in Makuyu. This trip will take around 1.5 hours. When they will arrive at children’s home, they will be met by our friendly staff. We have a trusted coordinator Lucy, who will always help them adjust to the Kenyan life style. We also provide a sleeping accommodation. Volunteers will live in a safe, clean room at the children’s home (separate rooms of volunteers). There is a full-time security guard, and the children’s home is also secured by a wall around. All the meals are also included, and the volunteers will have an opportunity to eat with the children and the other staff (two teachers/caretakers, manager, and director). Volunteers also have the option of visiting Mount Kenya, which is right nearby, or going on a Safari.
Volunteers at the Makuyu Education Centre will have a lot of flexibility in deciding how to help make improvements. Work hours are from 9AM to 5PM (meals for volunteers are included). Volunteers in the past have taken the children to the hospital for routine health check-ups, tutored the children after school and helped them with their homework, painted the school and built improvements such as bookshelves for the home, documented the children’s progress, took pictures and videos for fundraising initiatives, and completed a variety of other tasks. Volunteers can come for a short time (1 week) as well as for a long time (3 months).
We’ve had dozens of volunteers come to our project. Every single one of them was satisfied and we continue to stay in touch with them. We’ll be more than happy to provide you their testimonials and list them as references!
