Crisis Line Volunteers Needed The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands

Founded in 1977 the Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is a leading suicide prevention non-profit receiving over 20,000 calls each year from folks around the country suffering from isolation, depression, loneliness, and suicidal ideations.

And we need your help.

Our Crisis Line volunteers are retired educators, police officers, salespersons, CEOs, stay at home moms and dads, grandparents, students, landscapers, and everyone in between. They all share common characteristics-they are empathetic, compassionate, non-judgmental, and are able to listen well to others.

They are not clinicians; they do not diagnose or give advice. They simply offer each caller a safe space to talk about their problems.

Crisis Line Volunteers undergo rigorous training focusing on how to effectively handle a variety of calls using active listening techniques. Volunteers undergo 15 hours of either remote based and when appropriate at our center in Falmouth, MA,. Volunteers complete 2 hours web based CALMS training, 10 hours of shadow shifts, and 3 hours of at home reflection exercises and quizzes-all designed to prepare you to help those in need.

Volunteers should have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to listen without judgement, the will to refrain from giving advice, and the desire to help those in need.

Volunteers may choose to answer calls at home or in the center when it center reopens.
