Test Prep Instructors help low-income high school students prepare for college entrance exams, during Saturday afternoon sessions in the Loop (potentially virtual sessions depending on CDC and CPS guidance).

OUR STORY

Minds Matter is an academic mentoring program that empowers high-performing high school students from low-income families to achieve college admission and success. Students in our program participate in Saturday sessions which include mentoring, test prep, critical thinking and writing skill-building. During their summers students complete pre-college academic programs through Minds Matter.

We match each of our students with two mentors that work with them for the duration of our program, from their sophomore through senior years of high school. This

2-on-1 structure is one of the things that sets Minds Matter apart and ensures our mentees’ success.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We are looking for Test Prep Instructors for the 2021-2022 academic year. These roles will begin in September/October 2021.

TEST PREP INSTRUCTORS

The instructional component of our programs is designed to equip students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary for achieving academic success at school and on the SAT or ACT. Test prep instructors focus on either Math or Verbal, and teach small group lessons every other week on Saturdays.

VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT

When working with youth, one of the key components to building trust is just showing up. Commitment is important for our program—presence, proactive communication, and conscientiousness are what make Minds Matter Chicago work.

-We require a minimum commitment of 2-3 hours per week, including time needed for weekly session/lesson preparation and/or regular communication with your mentee.

-Instructors attend every other Saturday from September to May (excluding regular holidays and a winter break).

-Test Prep instructors lead workshops every other week from 10:30am - 12:30pm.

-We ask that test prep instructors devote at least one year to working within the program.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

-Our best volunteers are energetic, committed, and demonstrate a passion for our mission. We are looking for mentors who can build rapport and trust with students, and within our volunteer community.

-The ability to help mentees set goals and support them as they work to achieve those goals.

-Conscientious and communicative practices, like responsiveness to others and advance communication of absences.
