Dedicated volunteers are essential to the viability of Project EATS' operations. Project EATS' dedicated farm & pantry volunteer program is designed to incorporate members of the communities surrounding the sites in Project EATS farm network to have a stake in its successful operations. Volunteering at the farm is a weekly commitment in which the participant will need to complete at least 20 hours of participation before they are able to be recognized for their service with Project EATS.
Volunteers are expected to arrive on-time for their shift each week so that they are able to be seamlessly oriented to the day’s tasks along with their peers. Project EATS staff members overseeing volunteer groups will turn away volunteers who arrive late or are not dressed appropriately for farm work.
We work rain or shine, unless there is lightning so please dress appropriately for the weather forecast. It can be very hot on site with a lot of direct sun, so we advise wearing a hat, cool clothing, and a lot of sunblock. You will also need to wear appropriate work shoes (closed toe) and clothing for getting dirty.
Volunteers should plan to bring their own water and snacks as needed throughout the day. The types of tasks volunteers will participate in on the farm include:
-Weeding, cultivating and tending to crops as instructed by a Project EATS staff member.
-General site maintenance tasks, such as washing and sanitizing harvesting equipment and bins, as well as sweeping, mopping and trash pick up.
-Grounds maintenance tasks, such as mowing, weed whacking and assistance in re-constructing on-farm infrastructure, such as planter boxes.
-Assist with harvesting and wash/pack operations, where appropriate.
-Seeding, transplanting and soil preparation, where appropriate.
-Special projects, such as arranging floral bouquets and preparation for special events.
