Education, sanitation and microfinancing projects in Kolkata, India

Volunteers will be monitoring the projects on the field. Project for People has no expats: project implementation is carried out by our local partners.

Health Programme:

  • Primary Healthcare (for Medical students)

Medical students help local doctors in our rural facilities, where first aid service is delived. Their duties may include medicating wounds, taking blood pressure, doing injections...

Volunteers can also organize workshops with local communities or school children about hygiene issues.

Minimum stay: one month.

  • Coaching and medical staff training (for qualified personnel, such as obstetrics, gynecologists, dentists, nephrologists...)

Qualified volunteers have the opportunity to support the local medical and para-medical staff, working in the local facilities and/or organizing workshops about specific themes (with the support of an interpreter, English/Bengali).

This program is open to professionals, newly graduated students and students attending the specialization period in medicine or nursery.

Minimum stay: 2 weeks.

Education Programme:

  • Sponsorship programme (for students and volunteers of all ages)

Our Sponsorship programme allows the poorest children to attend school, receive health care and have a balanced diet, thanks to the support of Italian donors, each of whom sponsors one specific child (or multiple ones). Volunteers support the local staff: they verify that the database in Milan and the one in Kolkata contain the same information, visit the children in their houses and schools to check that everything is running smoothly and to gather updates for the donors, and supervise the programme.

Minimum stay: one month (two preferred).

  • Activities with children (for educators, students and volunteers of all ages)

Project for People collaborates with the local partner in the management of the primary schools and care centres for orphan, abandoned and disabled children, offering them a safe place where they can live well and thrive. Volunteers are involved in the educational and recreational activites of the children.

Minimum stay: one month.

Microcredit/Human Rights Programme

  • Microcredit Programme (for students/graduates in Economics and related areas)

Our microcredit programmes follow the model of the Grameen Bank of Yunus: they ensure access to credit to those who have nothing to offer as a warranty, allowing hundreds of women to break free by starting an activity and making a living.

Volunteers will support the staff in collecting data, elaborating the assessment indeces, gathering testimonials from the beneficiaries and analyzing their needs, in order to shape the programme so as to make it more and more effective and efficient.

Minimum stay: two months.

  • Women Peace Council (for students/graduates in Law, Sociology, or related areas)

Project for People supports the Women Peace Councils, groups of around 10 women each who meet daily to read and discuss about issues related to their rights, health, children education. They also learn how to solve family and community conflict in non-violent ways. The councils often organize open meetings to promote awareness among women in other villages and rural areas, using participative methodologies, such as community theatre.

Volunteers are asked to supervise the 45+ councils, by participating in their activities, collecting case studies, and supporting the local staff in the management and development of the programme.

Minimum stay: one month (two preferred).

Engineering/Architecture Programme

  • Innovation Programme (for students/graduates in engineering, architecture, design, agriculture, and related areas)

The volunteers, according to their specific skills, are requested to analyze the construction methods used locally, as well as the equipment of clinics, schools and infrastructures and to apply new techniques which valorize the existing materials and technologies. Other areas of operation are the research for innovative solutions to use renewable energy resources, the supply of water resources, the application of the new technologies to counter the digital divide, the technological development of traditional activities, such as agriculture, breeding and transformation of food. The programme includes the supervision and development of the current projects, gathering of data and analysis of the feasibility of new projects.

Minimum stay: two months.

We require a good level of English (B2, self-certified). Volunteers are expected to work full time Monday to Saturday. Please note that up to 4 hours per day may be dedicated to travelling to/from the rural villages, and such hours will of course count as working hours.
