About the Peer Mentor Role

Peer mentors oversee volunteer tutors to ensure that they have the teaching resources, strategies, sensitivity, confidence and support necessary to be effective tutors. They do this by regularly dropping in on individual sessions and providing tutors with verbal and written feedback, as well as by being an additional point of contact with the organization.

We are looking for folks with a background in the field of education — specifically experience with virtual education, or with teaching ESL, English, or Math is recommended. Strong sensitivity and emotional intelligence are also assets for this position.

About FORA: Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America

FORA is a not-for-profit organization based in Chicago dedicated to empowering refugees through education. We provide intensive 1-1 Math and English tutoring to newly arrived refugee students online. We have a center in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago where we tutor refugees students and adults in the neighborhood, but in response to the pandemic, we have transitioned to entirely remote/virtual instruction, and the difficulties faced by the refugee community in this crisis has led us to expand our services to reach more students. We doubled the number of students we were serving and we continue to try and evolve into an organization that can better serve the people we work with!
