RedRover Seeks New Board Member

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the community and in the lives of animals and people? Interested in sharing your skills and experience? 

RedRover is looking for dynamic, innovative, collaborative people to join our five- to nine-member team of volunteer board directors.

RedRover is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, national organization based in Sacramento, CA, dedicated to bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the bond between people and animals through emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance, and education. RedRover accomplishes its mission by engaging volunteers and supporters, collaborating with others, and maximizing the use of online technology.

RedRover is looking for board directors who have the following qualities:

  • Passion, knowledge, and experience related to animal protection and/or welfare
  • Enthusiastically dedicated to integrating social justice issues, such as anti-racism, into our animal welfare goals and mission
  • Willing to provide time and resources to the success of this organization
  • Ability to help the organization make new connections and broaden its communities of practice through the lenses of both animal welfare and anti-racism
  • Ability to cultivate relationships, provide stewardship, and solicit support for the organization
  •  Strong interpersonal, team-management, and communication skills; a bonus if a candidate is:
  • Bi- or multi-lingual
  • Can actively engage in and contribute to cross-cultural connections and collaborations
  •  Knowledge of anti-racism, anti-oppression, and equity, and experience encouraging safe(r), equitable spaces
  • Able to share RedRover’s programs with your networks and express its values and brand attributes: Caring, Respected, Unwavering, Inspirational, Vigilant
  •  Demonstrated evidence of the following competencies: Leadership, Integrity, Reliability, Critical Thinking, Effective Communication Skills, Strategic Planning, and Professionalism 

In alignment with our organizational values of anti-racism, equity, and inclusivity, it is our aim to have a board which reflects the diversity of the communities we seek to serve. Specific Board Duties:

  • Sets the “tone at the top” by ensuring that an ethical culture of trust, honesty, and integrity is promoted throughout RedRover
  • Oversees RedRover’s organizational and strategic plans and assures RedRover is being properly managed in accordance with its mission
  • Provides important fiscal oversight, including reviewing and approving an annual budget and significant changes in the organization’s auditing and accounting principles and practices
  • Ensures the President and CEO and the leadership team is competently managing the organization on a day-to-day basis

 Experience with not-for-profit organizations considered an asset

Commitment and Duties:

Board directors direct and lead the organization’s vision, mission, and values, and work in collaboration with the President and CEO. In addition, board directors provide strategic guidance, organizational oversight, and performance monitoring, and support the management and staff to ensure RedRover can deliver on our mission.

RedRover asks board directors to commit to four hours per month of board/committee participation.

The board of directors meets quarterly, and at least one of these meetings is in-person. In addition to meeting attendance, board directors will each be expected to actively participate on at least one of the board’s standing committees that meet quarterly or monthly, plus participate in an ad hoc task force or subcommittee which only meets as needed:  

  • Board Governance & Strategy Committee (monthly) 
  • Internal Affairs (Finance) Committee (quarterly) 
  • Technology Task Force (as needed), Audit Subcommittee (bi-annually) 
  • External Affairs Committee (Marketing/PR/Fundraising)(quarterly)
  • Legal Affairs Subcommittee (as needed) 

Board directors serve on a volunteer basis and are appointed for a maximum of two, three-year terms. There is no remuneration.

Location:

RedRover is located at 1419 21st Sacramento, California. Currently, board meetings are being held remotely via video conference.
