Spark the Change Colorado's Mental Wellness Program is a mental health service that provides free, short-term counseling to low-income communities in hopes of reducing barriers in receiving mental health. These services are provided free of charge to agencies and clients and are offered statewide. Last year, the Mental Wellness Program provided services to over 2,000 clients and more than 50 agencies throughout the state of Colorado.
Finding mental health care or therapy can be a difficult process for many. With the difficulties that people face as low-income individuals, there are many who also face challenges with other marginalized identities such as race, language barriers, gender, sexuality, etc. which makes finding the right help a lot more overwhelming. So often the negative stigma surrounding mental health issues and therapy prevent many from seeking the help they deserve. This makes it even harder for kids of struggling families to seek the help they need or to have their voices and emotions validated. As the Mental Wellness Program continues to grow, we are dedicated to serving the community by recognizing and valuing their barriers and specific needs and provide mental health services free of charge.
Licensed Mental Health (or candidates for licensure) volunteers are needed to provide mental health services on-site through our host site partner locations (schools, shelters, churches, community organizations) or can also provide counseling in private practice settings.
Volunteering is flexible, and our requirement is just 4 hours per month. Volunteer benefits include the opportunity to reach new and diverse clientele, free continuing education and networking opportunities, free clinical supervision for those seeking licensure, and the opportunity to give back to your community and provide a much-needed service to those who have barriers to accessing care.
Most of our clinicians are doing telehealth only, so that would require internet or phone connection. In person counseling is an option as well, based on the comfort level of the volunteer.
I hope you consider this opportunity, and if you have any questions or are interested in learning more about becoming a mental wellness volunteer and what it entails, please email me at: LChavez@sparkthechangecolorado.org--I would be more than happy to set up a time to talk about the program a little bit more through a zoom or phone call.
