PROGRAM: The fulltime & part-time members of the VT Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program (VYDC) implement diverse youth initiatives, fostering positive development & building resilience to help youth avoid opioid misuse & other unhealthy behaviors, transcend the effects of COVID-19, and the gain academic, social, & job skills needed to thrive. Website: VermontYouthAmeriCorps.org

SITE: The Governor’s Institutes of Vermont (GIV) fosters young people’s positive development through hands-on learning to inspire academic and creative passions, build confidence and leadership, and expand their sense of possibility. GIV attracts students from every high school for its summer and winter study opportunities, which usually are residential on college campuses. GIV brings a diverse group of students, college faculty, and professional mentors together for intergenerational learning in a wide range of academic and artistic subject areas. High schoolers choose courses and spend 1-2 weeks in residence with college faculty and professional mentors learning and expanding their skills, aspirations, and support networks. Target participant outcomes include increased self-confidence, meaningful social connections, academic motivation, and exposure to different career paths. The VYDC AmeriCorps member increases the capacity of all GIV programs with a special focus on amplifying outreach and developing strategies to ensure disadvantaged students can access programming. The member builds relationships with community partners and GIV alumni to gather stories of program outcomes and meets with youth and families to communicate the impact of GIV programs on participants.

COVID-19: The member conducts outreach to youth & families to ensure GIV programs are accessible to historically disadvantaged populations most impacted by the short- and long-term impacts of COVID-19, including the lack of access to academic opportunity and decreased social development.
