Archive of Human Genius Editor

About Kindling

Kindling is a 501c3 nonprofit that ignites change by sharing good news and connecting people with opportunities to build a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all. We are now building the world’s largest archive of social change milestones, known as the Archive of Human Genius, which shows the continuous emergence of human ingenuity and creativity throughout our long history.

Kindling is currently supported entirely by unpaid volunteers, including the Executive Director, Brand Director, Finance Director, Marketing Director, and Community & Partnerships Director. Over time, we aspire to grow into a financially sustained organization with full-time, salaried employees. In lieu of pay, current Kindling volunteers are empowered to co-create their own role. Our sincere hope is that a volunteer position at Kindling allows you to explore your interests and passions, gain much-needed professional experience, and grow through mentorship and leadership coaching.

About this role

Kindling seeks a volunteer Archive of Human Genius Editor to identify, research, author, and publish short summaries of historical milestones in human history (e.g., new inventions, breakthroughs in human rights and equality, groundbreaking policies, etc.) starting from pre-history continuing through to the early 21st Century. This position is open to all, but may be particularly relevant and helpful for history students.

The Archive of Human Genius Editor will be expected to write at least one web article of at least 300 words every week. Your articles will be published publicly and promoted widely across our thousands of newsletter subscribers and social media followers, helping you establish your name in the nonprofit sector and online media space. We are particularly interested in articles that showcase stories of human genius that often go untold in white, Western culture, including those from Indigenous cultures, people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, and societies from the Global South.

In exchange for your work, you will be offered practical training on a wide range of professional skills, including:

  • Writing and editing
  • Web research
  • WordPress/web administration
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Digital marketing
  • Web analytics
  • Leadership and personal development

Time commitment is flexible, but likely within the range of 3-15 hours a week.
