About Helpful Engineering

Helpful Engineering is an international, open-source community incubator focused on mobilizing people to help solve the Covid-19 pandemic and other critical issues. With thousands of volunteers worldwide, we support projects through innovations in engineering, community resources, software, and manufacturing. Most of the projects are focused on finding solutions to fix the lack of products used by healthcare professionals, including hardware and software, but also non-technical products like surgical masks.

We have engineers and doctors all around the world who are producing ventilators, protective equipment, websites, and systems to organize volunteers to assist their communities and medical workers. They are making heroic efforts to produce products in time to help the outbreak.

About Project OpenVent-Bristol

Project OpenVent-Bristol began in response to the COVID-19 crises aiming to design a very simple low cost ventilator for treatment of COVID-19 in developing countries. The OpenVent-Bristol’s ventilator has cut down functionality specifically for treatment of COVID-19 to keep costs low and a very simple design using readily available off-the-shelf components enables rapid manufacture. The team is working on the final stages of the design; once ready the final prototypes will be performance tested and released as open source and sent to our manufacturing partners.

Volunteer Position Description

The OpenVent Bristol ventilator consists of a control board with an MCU and FPGA each of which will have software to control a patient’s ventilation. We currently have a functional requirements document, a system architecture document and a software architecture document which identifies the software distribution across the FPGA and MCU. The FPGA designer will need to define the next level of detail and perform the following functions:

  • Finalize the FPGA software design for ventilating a patient
  • Perform the FPGA VHDL coding based on the design
  • Bench Test the FPGA software
  • FPGA software Integration with MCU software

Volunteer Position Requirements

This project has a need for an Electronic Engineer with the following experience in Field Programmable Gate Arrays:

  • VHDL (2008) coding with an emphasis on test bench generation
  • git/GitLab
  • Common embedded protocols such as SPI and I2C
  • Fixed-point algorithm implementation
  • GoWin EDA/FPGAs

Volunteer Position Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience as an FPGA designer
  • Fixed-point algorithm experience
  • Common embedded protocols such as SPI and I2C
  • GoWin EDA/FPGAs (preferred but not mandatory)
  • e able to work independently
  • Electronics Engineering degree (preferred but not mandatory)

Our organization is organic, transparent, and follows the principles of open source and effective altruism. Helpful Engineering expects all volunteers to adopt a professional attitude and be respectful of their fellow volunteers, which includes politeness, punctuality, giving notice, and communicating openly and transparently their work and progresses.
