Board Of Directors Treasurer

The Treasurer of the Board of Directors is responsible for the following:

  1. Over see the development of financial policies and their review by the board
  2. Assist in the annual budget and its presentation to the board for review
  3. Ensure that the monthly and quarterly financial statements are reviewed by the board
  4. Ensure that the board regularly monitors the organization’s financial performance and alerts it to any important discrepancies between planned and actual figures
  5. Ensure that the organization maintains the appropriate and accurate financial records and that these are up-to-date
  6. Ensure that government tax filings and remittances are submitted on a timely basis
  7. Ensure that liabilities are settled in a timely manner
  8. Verify that donations are handled appropriately and that grants and sponsor contracts are accounted for in accordance with the requirements of the funders
  9. Understand the operational policies, by-laws, and financial reporting practices
  10. Opening the bank account, managing cash flow and balancing bank statements

The treasurer should be knowledgeable of the organization’s records, policies, structure, and operational requirements. They should be able to provide advice and resources to the board on relevant topics, financial ratios, how to create understandable reports, and develop systems for ensuring the organization’s solvency.

The treasurer is responsible for ensuring the accounting and financial records are accurate, complete and up-to-date at all times. Treasurers are required to keep a calendar of important dates and filing deadlines, including the deadlines for Form 990 and filing tax returns. The treasurer should also enable a backup plan for making sure the organization meets deadlines in case the they are ill or not available for board duties unexpectedly.

Treasurers are not to give tax or financial advice to clients, donors, or sponsors and should recommend them to a tax or finance lawyer for professional advice.

The treasurer should be honest, and demonstrate integrity. The treasurer should be committed to accuracy, transparency and timeliness.

The treasurer should have a close working relationship with the Board of Directors, especially working alongside the Board President and Secretary.

The treasurer may also have additional tasks and responsibilities assigned as needed by the Founder, Executive Director, or Board President.
