Marina Orth Foundation

The Marina Orth Foundation works with children and youth from disadvantaged socioeconomic areas in and around Medellin, Colombia.   In support of The Sustainable Development Goals, we specialize in teaching STEM with a focus on applied technology, robotics, English, leadership, and social/emotional skill building both inside and outside the classroom.  We promote bilingualism, gender equality and give both students and teachers the tools to compete in the 21st century.

The foundation is looking for disciplined, creative, organized, empathetic, teaching volunteers with a decent knowledge of Spanish for the 2021 school year. Volunteers should be available for a minimum of six months and a maximum of 1 year.

Responsibilities of our Volunteers

• Full time work (3 to 5 hours teaching per day, 2 hours club, lesson planning) 
• Plan classes with the head teachers and support them in their classes.
• Lead and plan English clubs to be given as an extracurricular activity.
• Assist in the planning of cultural or recreational events for the reinforcement of English or to deepen understanding of English speaking culture with Spelling Bees, Valentine’s Day activities, Art Clubs, Passport Clubs, etc.
• Lead and plan English classes for the Marina Orth Foundation staff.
• Strictly follow COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidelines to keep students, teachers and volunteers safe

Requirements:

• Experience working with children.
• Certify English as your native language or certify a B2 level in English.
• Skills in basic tech.
• B1/B2 level of Spanish.
• Organized.
• Disciplined.
• Entrepreneurial.
• Flexible.
• Able to work in a team and independently.
• Open to new cultures and cultural experiences

1. What about COVID-19 in Colombia?

Right now international flights and the economy are open.  We ask everyone coming to work for the foundation to observe Colombian law:

• Strict mask wearing and practice of social distancing.  Fines and arrest for non-compliance. Note: The foundation has been fortunate that to date the area in which our schools are located has had a very low Covid rate.

2. What about the education system in Colombia?

Right now the schools we work in have announced a hybrid plan for next year in which students would be present for three days and virtual for 2. Final details are still being worked out.  You will learn the latest announcement when we do and we endeavor in every way to give you a positive experience during these uncertain times.
