WIIS West is the west coast based chapter of Women In International Security (WIIS) Global, an international organization dedicated to advancing the leadership and professional development of women in the field of international peace and security. We define "international security" broadly so as to encompass a variety of issues, including but not limited to: counter-terrorism; nonproliferation; foreign affairs; arms control to conflict prevention; peace-building; human rights; and environmental security.


Job Description

**This is a non-profit unpaid volunteer opportunity for now **

The Social Media Specialist role is responsible for the ongoing management and growth of WIIS West’s social media presence. This is a great opportunity to build relationships with Bay Area organizations and thought-leaders focused on all aspects of domestic and international security, gain a lot of visibility, bolster your resume. The goal is for this to lead to a paid position as we gain upcoming funding, grants, and donations.  If you are interested in bringing people together within the national and international security space in the western region of the US, we would like to hear from you.

Responsibilities

The volunteer will help develop our social media strategy and implementation plan, maintain WIIS West's presence on various social media platforms, starting with Facebook, and will help create and publish content that is relevant to our mission and the organizations we support. This person will regularly analyze and report on the activity on social media networks, and perform other duties including but not limited to:

  • Collaborates with Co-Presidents to develop marketing and communications plans that leverage the social media space. You will own the strategy and the execution of the ideas;
  • Creates, manages, and grows business presence across social media channels, including blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram on a regular schedule;
  • Responds to posts or comments to bring value to our audience’s interactions with WIIS West;
  • Performs research to find articles, stories, resources, or other content that is relevant to our community and posts it to our Facebook page in a manner that invites conversation and interaction;
  • Helps to create other content across owned and earned social channels - this could include blog posts, tweets, status updates, pins, photos, and videos; and
  • Leverages measurement tools to provide progress reports and mine insights, while continually finding ways to improve on those metrics through testing and new initiatives.


Qualifications

  • Experience with key social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.);
  • Ability to use online media tools to engage members, donors, and corporate partners;
  • Outgoing, enthusiastic, and creative;
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with keen attention to detail;
  • Works well independently and proactively as part of a team, and ability to meet deadlines;
  • A proactive personality that goes above and beyond, and solid communication skills; and
  • A strong grasp of the news environment and ability to discuss current events thoughtfully, while summing them up in a short amount of space.

Our offices are located in San Francisco, but due to the pandemic, this position is currently remote.
