Feet First is Washington state’s first and foremost advocacy organization for pedestrians. We stand for the creation and maintenance of safe, equitable, and healthy spaces for people who walk and roll, in every corner of Washington. We envision a future where all Washingtonians in urban areas, rural areas, and everywhere in between can and do walk or roll for transportation, exercise, and fun.

We are looking for qualified and enthusiastic leaders to join our cause through serving on our board of directors. The board of directors plays an integral role in sustaining and enhancing Feet First’s change-making work. As the highest leadership body of the organization, the Board is responsible for:

  • Determining the mission and purpose of the organization
  • Recruitment and evaluation of new board members, staffs, and volunteers
  • Strategic and organizational planning
  • Fundraising and resource development
  • Approving and monitoring the organization’s programs and initiatives
  • Enhancing the organization’s public image
  • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization.
  • Helping Feet First identify and create partnerships with other organizations across the state.

Board terms last three years with the option of remoniation thereafter. Our ideal board member is someone who:

  • Has a deep social connection to the community they serve and are passionate in pedestrian advocacy
  • Represents communities that are impacted by the lack of safe, equitable and healthy spaces for people walking and rolling, and/or communities that have been historically underrepresented and disenfranchised.
  • Is proficient and has a passion for race and social justice principles and values
  • Has expertise in advocacy, communications and marketing, finance, and/or pedestrian law and policy.

All board members serve on a volunteer basis.

Some of the key initiatives Feet First is involved in include our statewide Walk with Ease program, working with communities across the state to advocate for safer streets, and building and maintaining a statewide network of groups dedicated to walkability. We also advocate for funding for sidewalks and other pedestrian improvements throughout the state. Through our Sound Access for All program, we work to ensure that the Sound Transit light rail system includes safe and convenient walking access to stations.
