Volunteer Opportunity

AACWM Street Team

Posted by

The street team volunteers are responsible for interacting with the businesses and communities that surround the African American Civil War Memorial Museum. Volunteers will be crafting effective messages to share in the community while participating in team building exercises. The messages the volunteers are responsible for crafting will be used to promote upcoming events or new volunteer opportunities within the AACWM. Volunteers will also be tasked with recording the responses they receive from the community and sharing with the AACWM staff. Through spreading these messages the volunteer street team will be sharing historical and cultural information of the museum and memorial. Other duties of volunteers will include basic museum operations such as answering phone calls, providing museum information and directions to callers, taking messages and relaying them to appropriate personnel, monitoring visitors in the museum and keeping the front desk area neat and organized.

Site & Work Environment

Volunteers on the street team will be split between the African American Civil War Memorial Museum and the surrounding area of Ward 1. Each shift will begin in the museum prior to going into the community with your designated team. Parking at the AACWM is limited. The nearest metro stop to the museum is on the green/yellow line, U ST/African American Civil War Memorial Cardozo which is located directly in front of the African American Civil War Memorial.

Training & Support

Volunteers will participate in three training sessions prior to the start of their shift. The first training will be a National Mall Area and African American Civil War Museum co-led training session at the Museum. The second training session is a virtual workspace that will prompt you with questions about the history of the civil war and civil rights. The last training will be held at the AACWM that will specifically train volunteers on how to relay the message of the AACWM in the community. Volunteers will have to complete a refresher every other month via the virtual workspace to ensure they are retaining knowledge and following best practices.
