Graphic Designer (Volunteer)

Are you a talented creative leader who has a passion for communicating ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate users? The non-profit news organization WhoWhatWhy is looking for a volunteer Graphics Designer to collaborate in a redesign and rebranding of the site, newsletters, donation emails, and social media.

Who We Are

We are an independent news organization and community that is making a difference, setting new standards, and innovating on every front. WhoWhatWhy is staffed largely with skilled volunteers dedicated to elevating public awareness and fostering a more vigorous democracy.

Expectations

You will work remotely and on your own schedule, though we require a minimum commitment of 5-8 hours a week.  Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through email. All staff is required to respond to Slack and emails on a daily basis. This is a work from home position.

Responsibilities

  • Design mockups and layouts for the news site, social media platforms, newsletters, and donation emails
  • Ensure website design, content, social media sites, graphics, and functionality incorporate appropriate emerging trends and are consistent with WhoWhatWhy's 2020 rebranding standards
  • Collaborate with the Art Director, Creative Direction to develop and refine various designs, working on both long term and short term projects
  • Adapt and enhance existing brand design standards, such as icons, assets, images, and other components
  • Ensure alignment with creative and marketing objectives on all projects; ensure brand consistency across all media
  • Maintain a set of design best practices and guidelines to reduce and minimize production efforts, with an independent workflow to collaborate remotely
  • Bring visual creativity and innovation to campaigns and projects

Qualifications


  • Demonstrated experience to conceptualize and design with digital/print layout of catalogs, newspapers, or magazines, cover art for books and/or periodicals, advertising, marketing outreach collateral, packaging, and websites.
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, or related area.
  •   3+ years’ experience in the field of graphic design, photography, illustration or other related fields, preferably in a fast-paced digital media environment.
  • Must have access and Proven extensive experience working with the Adobe Creative Suite, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Knowledge about digital content strategies, from contemporary website styling to social media design trends, familiar and comfortable with best practices in modern SEO strategies.
  • Must showcase a solid fundamental understanding of digital design typography, color, and composition.
  • Excellent independent time management and prioritization skills with strong attention to detail.
  • A creative mindset, with the ability to effectively analyze how to adapt and evolve to WhoWhatWhy's style guide.
