Chicago HOPES for Kids provides shelter-based academic support for children in Chicago's homeless and domestic violence shelters for Kindergarten - 5th grade students 2 hours a day Monday - Thursday, and a Literacy Leaders program for 6th-9th graders 2 hours a day 3 days a week. Both programs are volunteer based and consist of three major components; homework help, individual reading support, and enrichment activities. Every volunteer works one-on-one or in a small group with children, allowing for a focus not just on individual academic needs, but also Social Emotional Learning. Our Fall Program begins in October and runs through mid-December; the winter/spring program begins in late January and runs through the end of May; the summer program begins late June and runs through early August. All programs are coordinated out of our central office housed in the Chicago Literacy Alliance’s Literacenter, and at each shelter, a part-time staff member manages the program and works with volunteers to help provide quality academic support to the children. Chicago HOPES after-school programs are held at 8 shelter sites throughout Chicago.

Member Duties : Part-Time Americorps Members will work 1:1 or in small groups with children, either in our program for grades K-5 or 6-9 at a homeless or domestic violence shelter on the south or west sides of Chicago four days a week: M-Th evenings. They will be a member of a designated shelter site’s leadership team by helping students with homework, individualized literacy, guiding and community volunteers, conducting reading assessments, and supporting Site Coordinators in leading the daily enrichment activity. They will also meet on Fridays to work on improving Chicago HOPES After School programs or to receive professional training in Trauma Informed Care, or Literacy. The role is a 10-15hr/week commitment, with the majority of time spend at the partner shelter site.
