Meals on Wheels of Alameda County is recruiting two new board members who have experience with fundraising, corporate relations, community outreach, and more.

Who You Are

A passionate and committed individual who is interested in supporting the delivery of nutritious meals to homebound seniors throughout Alameda County.

Our History

Meals on Wheels of Alameda County was founded in 1987 (as Countymeals-on-Wheels) and is a non-profit 501(c)3, governed by a Board of Directors and administered by an Executive Director. Meals on Wheels of Alameda County serves as an umbrella organization to the 6 independent Meals on Wheels delivery programs throughout the county that prepare and deliver nearly 3,200 meals to homebound seniors every delivery day. Our Mission

To assist frail, homebound seniors to maintain their independence by fundraising and providing financial support, community outreach and strategic assistance to Meals on Wheels programs in Alameda County that deliver nutritious meals and perform wellness checks.

Our Vision

A community that has ended senior hunger. 

Our Board Structure

The Board of Directors is comprised of at least 9 individuals, including four leadership officers:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary

The Board of Directors meets 6 times a year in addition to the various standing committee meetings which include:

  • Executive Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Development Committee
  • Governance Committee
  • Budget Surplus Committee ad-hoc

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated breadth and depth of leadership & fundraising experience;
  • Integrity and high ethical standards;
  • Sufficient time to devote to MOWAC's business as a member of the Board;
  • Ability to comply with the Board's Code of Conduct; and
  • Demonstrated ability to think independently and work collaboratively.

Board Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of board directors is to steward the organization’s strategic direction, resources, and policies in accordance with our mission and values to maximize fundraising revenue.

Uphold duties to MOWAC and its mission 

1. Understand, support, and promote MOWAC’s mission 

2. Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability 

3. Avoid self-dealing. Avoid and admit to any conflicts of interest. 

4. Enhance the organization’s public standing by acting as an ambassador for the organization 

5. Review the organization’s strategic plan and adherence to that strategic plan 

6. Participate in a meal delivery route once every fiscal year to gain a firsthand appreciation of Meals on Wheels programs 

Support MOWAC officers and staff 

7. Collaborate with the officers and staff of MOWAC to support their operation of the organization 

8. Evaluate officer performance and support officer leadership of MOWAC 

Contribute to MOWAC’s financial success 

9. Make a personally meaningful financial contribution to the organizations. 10.Leverage personal and professional networks to procure financial gifts from foundations, corporations, and individuals.

10. Collaborate with fellow board members to procure partnerships and cultivate major donors. 

Participate in the operation of the Board 

11. Assist the Board in executing its fiduciary responsibilities, such as reviewing the organization’s financial reports.

12. Attend all Board meetings and associated meetings, and review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings. 

13. Serve on at least 2 Board Committees and take on special assignments, as necessary. 

Maintain a successful Board of Directors 

14.Build a competent Board that will articulate prerequisites for candidates, orient new members, and periodically and comprehensively evaluate its own performance. 

15. Recommend potential members to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and organization.
