Nurture Seattle Parent Mentor

Background

Committee for Children is accepting applications for the Nurture Seattle Mentor Program, a text-based peer support program for new and expecting parents. We'll offer training, support, and a growing community of volunteer parents; all you need to bring is your own parenting expertise and a desire to support others starting their parenting journey. The Nurture Seattle Program builds on the success of NurturePA, a non-profit organization in Pittsburgh that matches new moms with volunteer mentor moms who offer parenting information, referrals to local resources, and sometimes most critically, validation and a sympathetic ear -- all through text messages! This volunteer opportunity offers the chance to make a big impact within a flexible time frame (about 1-2 hours/week, when and where you like).

Committee for Children is the non-profit organization behind Second Step - a research and evidence-based social and emotional learning curriculum that reaches 14 million children each year. Over the last 40 years, we’ve made social and emotional learning essential for educators all over the world. Now, we want to support social and emotional learning for families, starting with new parents.

Role Description

As a Mentor, you will join a community of experienced parents, dedicated to supporting new parents through the early stages of parenthood. We’ll match you with 5-10 new parents from communities across the Greater Seattle Area. Every week, you’ll check in with each of your mentees with a text message. These conversations take place on a secure online platform accessible by computer or tablet, so you can easily send and receive text messages, wherever and whenever you have internet access. The platform allows you to have impactful conversations and support your mentees on your lunch break or at home in bed - you make your own schedule based on what’s convenient for you. The platform technology will help you provide your mentees with evidence-backed information, articles, and child development trackers as needed, customized to their needs. Committee for Children program staff will be available to assist you if any questions or concerns arise.

We ask for a year-long commitment, and are recruiting on a rolling basis. All applicants will go through a screening process which entails an application and request for references. Online training will be provided.
