What is involved?

Volunteers will be responsible for helping to keep the memorial clean, strategizing, and implementing new ways to bring more life into it. The beautification team is responsible for enhancing the visibility of the monument by creating a clean and lively environment surrounding the memorial. Along with formulating new ideas, the volunteer team will be responsible for spot cleaning and reporting maintenance concerns to museum or National Park Service staff. Volunteers will be given the opportunity to host their own group clean up events with organizations of their choice once approved by AACWM staff. The beautification team will also keep count of people who visit the memorial for a daily report. Other duties of volunteers will include basic museum operations such as answering phone calls, providing visitor information and directions to callers, taking messages and relaying them to appropriate personnel, monitoring and recording visitors in museums and keeping the front desk area neat and organized.

Site & Work Environment

Volunteers will be split between the AACWM and African American Civil War Memorial. Each shift will begin in the museum prior to going across the street to the memorial. Parking at the AACWM is limited. The nearest metro stop to the museum is on the green/yellow line, U ST/African American Civil War Memorial Cardozo which is located directly in front of the African American Civil War Memorial.

Training

Volunteers will participate in three training sessions prior to the start of their shift. The first training will be a National Mall Area and African American Civil War Museum training led by the NPS at the Museum. The second training session is a virtual workspace that will prompt you with questions about the history of the civil war and/or civil rights. The last training will be held at the AACWM that will specifically train volunteers on the goals and expectations of the beautification team. Volunteers will have to complete a refresher every other month via the virtual workspace to ensure they are retaining knowledge and following best practices.
