The Benefits of Fostering
- Have an animal companion without the lifetime commitment.
- Help an animal recover from an illness/injury, with medical care covered by SHS.
- Give extra TLC to puppies and kittens too young to be adopted.
- Foster homes help animals transition from the stress of living at the shelter.
Responsibilities of Foster Parents
- Provide a safe, clean, and caring environment.
- Provide food, water, litter, toys/enrichment, and shelter.
- Provide exercise and socialization if appropriate.
- Monitor for physical and mental wellbeing.
- Transport to/from any necessary vet appointments.
- Transport to/from offsite adoption events
- If you are fostering kittens or puppies, isolation from other animals in the home is required for a minimum of 14 days.

How to Apply
Spokane Humane Society requires that its foster parents...
...live within 60 minutes of the shelter in case of veterinary emergencies requiring you to bring your foster pet to the shelter immediately.
...are able to remain in consistent contact with the foster coordinator by replying to emails, text messages and phone calls within 48 hours.
...abide by the policies and procedures of the Spokane Humane Society foster program detailed in the Foster Handbook.
...fill out and sign a background check form and volunteer liability waiver prior to taking home your first foster pet.
