What is involved?

The primary role of the cataloging and packing volunteers is to be responsible for carefully logging and placing the respective artifacts within their boxes. Volunteers must report on any damages to artifacts or materials to AACWM staff prior to article storage. Volunteers will also function within a team environment to establish a packing system that allows items to be stored in a timely manner. Volunteers will also receive the opportunity to shape interpretive stories and/or questions around exhibitions related to artifact collections and books. Other volunteer duties will include basic museum operations such as answering phone calls, providing visitor information and orientation to callers, taking messages and relaying them to appropriate personnel, monitoring and counting visitors in museums and keeping the front desk area neat and organized.

Site & Work Environment

Volunteers will complete their tasks at the African American Civil War Museum, the museum is located across the street from the AACW Memorial at 1925 Vermont Ave, NW Washington DC. Parking at the AACWM is very limited. The nearest metro stop to the museum is the green/yellow line, U ST/African American Civil War Memorial Cardozo (9th Street Exit) which is located directly in front of the African American Civil War Memorial.

Training & Support

Volunteers will participate in three training sessions prior to the start of their shift. The first training will be a National Mall Area and African American Civil War Museum training co-led by the NPS at the Museum. The second training session is a virtual workspace that will prompt you with questions about the history of the civil war and/or civil rights. The last training will be held at the AACWM that will specifically train volunteers on cataloging and packing required artifacts and books. Volunteers will have to complete a refresher every other month via the virtual workspace to ensure they are retaining knowledge and following best practices.

Role is suitable for those with:

  • An interest in museum artifacts/collections or museum studies
