Volunteers Needed to Help Those Impacted by Blood Cancer!

There Goes My Hero (TGMH) is a nonprofit organization based in Baltimore. Our mission is: Save lives. Provide hope. Help those impacted by blood cancer. The organization was founded in 2009 with the goal of supporting leukemia patients and their families after our founder Erik Sauer’s own battle with blood cancer. Although we are small, we have a large impact. Since 2009, we have added over 21,755 people to the bone marrow donor registry, which has resulted in 365 matches and led to 43 life-saving transplants.

We also accomplish our mission through a variety of initiatives including the Hero Fund and Color The Registry. In partnership with Johns Hopkins Hospital and Moveable Feast, the Hero Fund allows us to cover the unanticipated costs of blood cancer treatment, including meals during treatment, medically-tailored meals post discharge, parking, transportation, and copays. This prevents patients and families from having to forgo life-saving medication to cover their basic needs like rent, mortgage, and utilities.

Hero is now launching our new program, Color The Registry. Our Color The Registry initiative seeks to diversify the bone marrow donor registry, offering hope to all patients in need of a bone marrow transplant, regardless of their ethnic or racial background. This project aims to close the racial gap in bone marrow transplants by increasing access to transplants for traditionally underserved communities, improving understanding of health issues in diverse communities, and increasing the quality of life for patients of color. We want to increase the odds for patients by conducting more drives to help dispel misinformation and highlight the need for donors in the African American and Latino communities.
