A Girls on the Run® Board Member must possess a passion for and commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of girls in third through eighth grades. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program (PA-PYD) that uses running as a vehicle to influence positive social, cognitive, physical, emotional and psychological assets and development. Over the course of the program, girls will: Develop and improve competence, feel confident in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Such life skills will prevent unhealthy and risky behaviors, such as physical inactivity and negative body image, and promote positive health outcomes (e.g., physical, mental, social, and spiritual health).
Girls on the Run believes that all girls and communities should have access to our programs. We strive to eliminate barriers to participation, to continue creating programming that engages all communities, to be intentional about staff and volunteer diversity and to promote a culture of inclusion across the organization.
Financial experience managing budget or accounting background is highly recommended for this position.
Living or working the Hunterdon (NJ), Bucks(PA) and Warren (NJ) counties area or strong connection to the area.
Length of Term: Board members will serve two-year terms with the option of renewal pending board approval and performance.
Meetings and Time Commitment: Participation in board meetings is mandatory. Board meetings will be held quarterly (January, April, July, and October) during majority-voted dates and times virtually (during COVID-19 pandemic) and in-person in Hunterdon County, NJ. Meetings are two hours in length. Board members are asked to attend no fewer than 2 special events per year to ensure board presence at Girls on the Run cultivation activities. Events include: GOTR 5K’s (Fall / Spring).
Annual Financial Commitment: All board members should consider Girls on the Run a philanthropic priority. Girls on the Run requires $500.00 in annual board dues.
Location: Recommended that Board Members live, work or have a strong connection with Hunterdon County NJ, Bucks County PA, or Warren County NJ.
Girls on the Run of Hunterdon, Bucks and Warren Counties (GOTR HBW) is one of over 225 councils of Girls on the Run International (GOTRI), an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, that provides empowerment and self-esteem building programs to girls in grades 3-8. GOTRI as an organization was established in 1996 and is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our own council was established in 2006, and we are celebrating our 15th birthday this year.
Each spring and fall, we host our season-ending 5k celebration, with over 1,000 runners, spectators and volunteers. This event, which is open to the public, centers on the girls in our program and celebrates their achievements throughout the 10-week season.
GOTR HBW is passionate about supporting young girls in our community and helping them reach their truest potential. Since 2006, we have served over 9,000 girls, worked with more than 3,750 volunteers, and provided over $800,000 in program subsidies and scholarships.
