Mission Statement: 

The Lunar Doula Collective seeks to provide emotional, physical, and informational support free of charge to those undergoing miscarriage, stillbirth, or pregnancy termination in Southeast Michigan. LDC strives to honor the reproductive justice framework by creating a nonjudgmental space in which sexual and reproductive health equity is essential for all human beings regardless of sexual, racial, and gender identities.

Job Description:

LDC is seeking a board member to serve as President to help this young nonprofit organization further its mission of providing compassionate support to those experiencing pregnancy loss and termination procedures throughout southeast Michigan. In addition to carrying out general responsibilities of a Board Member, the responsibilities of the President include: 

  • Leadership, governance, and oversight of the nonprofit organization, Board of Directors, and Executive Director
  • Partnering with the Executive Director in achieving LDC’s mission and focusing the board on mission accomplishment and outcomes 
  • Providing leadership to the Board of Directors, setting the tone and culture of LDC’s volunteer peer group and working to engage the board in project outcomes 
  • Helping guide and mediate board actions with respect to organizational priorities and governance concerns 
  • Playing a leading role in fundraising events; sets example for annual giving by the board and tracks compliance with giving policies for the board 
  • Helps to determine how the board will track mission outcomes 
  • Evaluating the performance of the Executive Director, the effectiveness of the board members, and the performance of the organization in achieving its mission

Length of Term: 

The Board President will serve for a two-year term from the effective date 


Time Commitment Requirement:

LDC’s current status as a newly-formed organization requires a working board committed to helping grow the organization. As such, board members will be asked to commit 10-15 hours monthly to their board duties, including monthly board meetings with an average of 2 hours per meeting, and be available for calls with the Executive Director for a minimum of 1 hour per month. 


Qualifications: 

LDC Board Members must demonstrate passion for and commitment to LDC’s goals of promoting the Reproductive Justice Framework. Due to LDC’s work to support communities throughout southeast Michigan, a candidate with connections to Michigan is ideal. A candidate with experience in nonprofit organization and development is preferred. The ideal Board President Candidate will be: 

  • A proven leader with experience in the nonprofit/public health sector and with knowledge of best practices in serving diverse underserved populations
  • A seasoned professional and experienced manager who knows how to recruit, coach, and develop members for nonprofit board of directors
  • An exceptional relationship builder who can quickly gain the confidence of community partners, stakeholders, and potential donors
  • A passionate advocate for bodily autonomy and birthing rights of all individuals, with knowledge of social and emotional needs of those experiencing pregnancy loss, including an understanding of and commitment to addressing barriers and health disparities that exist for those seeking reproductive health resources
  • Able to promote LDC programs through developing strong and sustainable partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, raising public and private funds as needed
  • Dynamic and versatile, able to engage a variety of stakeholders in dialogue and speak in a clear, compelling, and authentic manner about LDC’s goals and priorities and the Board of Directors’ decision-making processes and plans toward meeting them
