Website Design for Small Non-Profit

Remote, Volunteer must be in United States

Details

Time Commitment:A few days
Recurrence:One time only

Description

Summary:  The Massachusetts Moderators Association (MMA) seeks a volunteer to help it redesign its website.  We see this work proceeding in two stages:  (1) Understanding of the functional requirements and recommendation of an appropriate web-hosting platform with supplementary apps as needed; and (2) Website design, migration of content from the current website, and addition of new content and functionality.

About the MMA:  The MMA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association that provides opportunities for its members to communicate and meet in order to exchange ideas and information which can enhance the conduct of town meetings and for the education of moderators, other state and local officials, and the public about town meeting procedures.  Our membership includes active and former elected Town Moderators.  In Massachusetts municipalities are organized either as cities or towns.  In Massachusetts towns, the legislative body is called Town Meeting. The citizens elect the Moderator to preside over Town Meeting.  The MMA is run almost completely on a volunteer basis by its members, with just a limited part-time administrative employee.

Details of Assistance Sought

The current MMA website (https://massmoderators.org/) is very basic—difficult to update and navigate, and so relatively little used.  The primary mission for a revised website is to serve members of the Association in two major ways:

  • To give members access to information about MMA events, meetings, other activities and their membership, combined with transactional capability that allows them to register and pay for events and membership.
  • To be a repository of information about the structure, practice and traditions of Town Meeting and Moderators in Massachusetts.

Although service to the membership is the primary mission, the website should maintain some access to the general public for guidance to information about Town Meeting.

More specifically, the following functionality will be needed:

  1. A few publicly accessible informational pages
  2. Membership registration, payment, and management
  3. Event registration, payment, and management
  4. A password-protected resource area for uploading, downloading, and searching for documents stored in Google Workspace.  The MMA maintains a non-profit enterprise-level Google Workspace account.  Using Google Workspace as a “library” we would like to use the website as a portal where members can go to (a) upload materials to be added to the library; and (b) search for and download materials responsive to search inquiries.

Once the website is built, we expect that it will be administered and maintained by volunteers.  It is therefore essential that a hosting platform and any associated apps be very easy to use and maintain and not rely on custom code.  Also, any payment functionality must rely on robust plug-ins from third party payment processors, such as PayPal, Stripe, or Square.

We therefore would expect the work to proceed in two stages:  1) Understanding of the functional requirements and recommendation of an appropriate web-hosting platform with supplementary apps as needed; and (2) Website design, migration of content from the current website, and addition of new content and functionality.

Important note re: web-hosting. Since we are a volunteer-run organization with minimal technical capability – and with functional requirements that are not that different from many other small non-profits, we anticipate that web-hosting will be on a well-known commercial platform such as Wordpress, Wix, etc.¸or on a membership management solution that includes webhosting as part of its offering.

Desired Experience

•    Website-building using common platforms such as Wordpress, Wix, Squarespace, etc.

•    Membership management platforms or plug-ins, such as memberPress, NoviAMS, WildApricot

•    Apps/plug-ins for events, payments, etc.

•    Google Workspace

•    Working in collaborative environments and with volunteers
