Design, Partnering, Management, and Innovation (DPMI) Certificate Program

DPMI was launched 17 years ago at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. The program has reached over 2000 participants in diverse venues including the US, Egypt, Rwanda, Kenya, Ecuador, and Colombia. DPMI’s original and principal faculty members (Dr. Beryl Levinger, Distinguished Professor Emerita at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies; Evan Bloom, and Claudia Liebler, co-founders and managing partners at Root Change) are excited to announce the program’s transition from its institutional birthplace to Root Change. We believe that placing DPMI squarely within a leading-edge development organization devoted to “bringing people together to question assumptions, think deeply, test ideas, and lead the way to a world built on social justice principles” is itself an important innovation.

  • The Root Change program on Design, Partnering, Management, and Innovation (DPMI) is a professional certificate program for activists who wish to enter or advance a social justice career.
  • The program is open to practitioners, career-changers, graduate students, and a limited number of gifted undergraduates.
  • The typical DPMI participant seeks to address such issues as community development, humanitarian relief, environmental sustainability, just livelihoods, or political empowerment.
  • Since its launch 17 years ago, DPMI has reached over 2000 participants in diverse venues including the US, Egypt, Rwanda, Kenya, Ecuador, and Colombia.
  • The January 2021 DPMI is offered as a partnership between Root Change and the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA), a federally recognized tribal government serving 4,400 Tribal Citizens in Alaska through its mission to “exercise its sovereign rights and powers, to preserve the integrity of Tribal society, and improve the lives of individual Tribal Citizens.”
  • The program combines synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Learners work under the guidance of DPMI Academic Director Dr. Beryl Levinger and Tristan Guevin, STA’s Cultural Resources, Education and Employment Department director.
