The Material Innovation Initiative (MII) fast tracks innovation in next-gen materials for the fashion, automotive, and home goods industries with a focus on replacing animal-based materials. MII seeks a few volunteers motivated to make a difference for animals and the environment for summer 2021 (8-12 weeks in June, July, and/or August, depending on college/university schedule). Each volunteer is expected to work around 20 hours per week. 

These volunteer positions are an opportunity to learn about the materials industry and the latest in animal-free and sustainable innovations. The volunteers will assist with a variety of projects depending on the department in which they work. Upon completion of this volunteer position, the volunteer will receive a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation. If your college/university awards credit for volunteer work, we will work with you to obtain it. See some reviews from previous volunteers here

We are looking volunteers for our science and technology, development, and brand engagement departments. Please specify your preference when submitting your cover letter. 


Primary Responsibilities and Duties for Science and Technology:

Volunteers in the MII Development Department will receive an overview of next-gen material technology. Specifically, volunteers in this department will work on one or more of the following topics: 

  • Conduct research on the general technology space for creating next-gen materials including cell culture & fermentation processes, tissue engineering, bioplastics, fiber science, and composites;
  • Conduct research on next-gen material companies’ technology, main components, and market-readiness; 
  • Conduct research on the material properties of fur and wool; 
  • Identify, collate, and summarize emerging academic studies on next-gen materials with a focus on silk, wool, and fur; and/or
  • Other duties assigned as time and interest permit.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties for Development:

Volunteers in the MII Development Department will receive substantial exposure in nonprofit development, grant writing, donor research and prospecting, solicitation strategy, management, and invaluable international exposure and experience. Specifically, volunteers in this department will work on the following: 

  • Conduct and analyze individual and foundation prospect research data;
  • Maintain the donor database and gift acknowledgements;
  • Write donor and prospect correspondence for the annual fund; 
  • Write case statements for grant applications;
  • Engage with MII volunteers;
  • Attend development team meetings and donor meetings; and/or 
  • Other duties assigned as time and interest permit.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties for Brand Engagement:

Volunteers in the MII Development Department will receive an overview of the fashion, automotive, and home goods industry including major brands and their commitment to sustainability. Specifically, volunteers in this department will work on the following: 

  • Gather information on brands’ sustainability statements and commitments; 
  • Gather information on brands’ use of raw materials in their products; 
  • Gather information about the structure of brands’ internal departments including the existence or lack thereof of corporate social responsibility, innovation, marketing, sourcing, and any affiliated charitable entities and the contact information for key individuals; and/or
  • Other duties assigned as time and interest permit.

Position Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with interests in animal welfare and environmental issues, especially pertaining to materials in the fashion industry. 
  • For science and technology positions, prior experience or course of study in material science, material engineering, biology, or chemistry is highly recommended.  
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently on a distributed team using google drive.
  • Ability to take direction, but also to find solutions independently.
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organization.
