Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs Pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.

You need no experience or training. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects. We provide advance information on your role, and hold a brief orientation before the workshop begins.

This writing workshop needs your help at a school in Washington Heights, NYC. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with program code 42LN-B.

Date/Time: Monday, August 12th / 9:00 - 10:30 AM (please arrive 20 minutes early for orientation)

About the program: Second-graders read about bees and urban gardens in Lela Nargi's The Honeybee Man, a look at the life of a Brooklyn beekeeper-just like the one from City Growers who visited the class with live hive residents. Coaches will guide students in polishing their writing worksheets, or transforming the material into paragraphs about these important pollinators.
