Short-Term (few weeks/months)

Although the public school system in Trujillo makes it possible for all children to attend school, the quality of education and especially arts education is extremely limited. Although research has shown that extracurricular activities such as musical ensembles have a strong impact in preventing at-risk children from getting involved with crime and gangs at a young age, the lack of funding for public schools makes it nearly impossible for them to sustain a music program. As a result, a large portion of the population has little to no contact with classical music and few have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument.

Music program volunteers will have the opportunity to work together with staff of the Youth Orchestra of Trujillo to put on music workshops with children and young people from all economic backgrounds in the city. This organization works to give children the opportunity to reach their full potential through the benefits of music and learning to play a musical instrument. They work primarily with children who are from the marginal urban sector and are at risk to become involved with crime, alcohol, drugs and prostitution. It has been proven that many children from this sector become involved in this type of destructive behavior as a result of the fact that there are very few possibilities for these children to develop their creative and artistic abilities. By giving these children the opportunity to participate in musical and artistic workshops, the youth orchestra works to give these children the opportunity to become productive members of the society and break free of the patterns that prevent so many young people from breaking the cycle of poverty.

The organization has as a goal to make orchestral music a possibility for all children in Northern Peru, an opportunity which is now reserved for middle to upper-class families, primarily those whose parents or relatives are musicians. As of now, they are working hard to keep their program free of charge and available to all children who have a desire to learn but are working to find the instruments for them to play!

We are especially in need of volunteers who are studying music and are specializing in violin, viola, cello or flute. If you are interested in working with music students but are not specializing in music, please email us at info@viveperu.org to talk with you about how you might be able to best serve the community. Also, please visit our website at www.viveperu.org for more information.

Groups of volunteers are organized in May-August and December-January, but volunteers are also needed throughout the year - especially if you are able to commit 3 months or more! Please write us to let us know what your availability is and we will work to set up a program that best fits your availability and goals.
