Hestia Hellas is a NGO that serves vulnerable populations in Athens including: children and adults, native Greeks affected by the strained economy, and refugees looking to settle in Greece or other parts of Europe.

Our goal is to help these populations prosper and achieve a more dignified life by providing critical support and self-sustaining skills including: psycho-social counseling, vocational training, life skills and community advocacy. We support children in our safe, child-friendly space.

Hestia means “hearth, fireplace, altar” and embodies the ancient Greek Goddess of the family, home and domesticity.  As the hearth was the centre of family life in the ancient world, Hestia Hellas aims to provide a safe space for refugees and locals to come together, interact, socialize, learn essential skills and build a home away from home.

The role

Here at Hestia, hospitality is our priority – and being understanding and heard in your native language is an essential piece of providing safety and comfort to our guests. If you are passionate about helping individuals have a clear voice through translation and interpretation, we need your help. As a mediator, you will provide guidance to both guests and staff on the best practices for communication relevant to cultural norms. We are seeking volunteers with an advanced level of English or Greek (speaking, reading, and writing) as well as any of the following languages: Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Greek, Kurmanji, Sorani, or Urdu.

We welcome short-term volunteers (2-4 weeks). However we prefer long-term commitments! We need help on weekdays (Mo-Fr). Your schedule will be flexible.

Our requirements:

  • Must be fluent in English
  • Must be fluent in any of the following languages, Greek, Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Kurmanji, Sorani, or Urdu.
