The National Foster Youth Institute (NFYI) is looking for a communications volunteer to help out during our 2019 Congressional Shadow Day Experience May 31 - June 6 in Washington, DC.

For the past seven years, NFYI has worked with the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth to put on Shadow Day. Current and former foster youth ages 18 to 30 are invited to Washington, D.C. to be paired with their members of Congress for a day on Capitol Hill. The 120 participants spend a week gaining a better understanding of the role of Congress in the child welfare system and learning how they can make their voices heard on issues they care about in their own communities.

We’re looking for a communications volunteer to help us with the following:

• Putting together and distributing media kits

• Engaging with members of the press and directing them to appropriate staffers

• Wrangling the press at events

• Posting on and monitoring social media channels

• Creating social media and website content

• Taking photos and video

• Supporting youth participants

We’re looking for caring and patient volunteers who are committed to helping young adults develop the tools they need to advocate for improvements to the child welfare system. Volunteers should be based in the DC area. We can provide course credit, recommendations for future job opportunities, transportation reimbursement and meals. If you’re interested, please send an email, resume and two references to Mariah.craven@nfyi.org.
