Description

About the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House (MFNH):

MFNH was founded in 1902 as a settlement house to provide services to help immigrants assimilate into American culture. The settlement movement was a reformist social movement that began in the 1880s in England and the United States with the goal of getting the rich and poor to live more closely together in an interdependent community.   Located in the historic birthplace and residence of celebrated feminist, author, and transcendentalist, Margaret Fuller, the house has stood as a beacon of hope and acceptance for thousands of Cambridge and Greater Boston’s most vulnerable residents for more than 100 years. During the period when MFNH was founded, millions of European people immigrated to the United States – more than 12 million between 1890 and 1910. For more than a century, the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House (MFNH) has worked with generations of families from The Port, one of the most diverse communities in Cambridge. Today MFNH serves as a critical resource for more than 4,000 people a year. We provide support and services to some of the most vulnerable individuals and families in Cambridge and beyond—all from our historic home on Cherry Street.
