Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs Pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.

You need no experience or training. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This writing workshop needs your help at a school in Washington Heights. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code and time slot(s) you'd like. Please arrive 15 minutes early for orientation.

Program 32868CB-GM

Date/Times (choose one or both): Wednesday, May 15th / 9:00 - 9:45 AM (6th grade) and/or 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM (8th grade)

About the program: Both classes read Kinda Like Brothers by Coe Booth, about two boys who must learn to get along as they cope with changes in their lives. As the basis for their writing projects, students researched and discussed the challenges of the foster care system. Writing coaches will help sixth-graders add detail to personal narratives about what drove them to make a tough choice; eighth-graders are developing the main character in a fictional story about a difficult decision and the factors that influenced it.
