Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute is an educational nonprofit empowering underserved youth in grades K–12 to think creatively, write effectively, and succeed academically alongside a community of caring volunteers. MOI believes in the power of writing and storytelling to change the lives of young people (and grown-ups). When we're not searching for the Lost Ocean of Minnesota, we're busy building creativity with kids of all ages through free creative writing programs.
Every Monday through Thursday, MOI hosts After-School Homework Help for students in grades K–12. Students are paired with a volunteer tutor who guides them through any homework they bring from school. Then, students explore creative writing prompts and activities at the Writers' Table. Volunteers are crucial to providing the one-on-one and small-group attention that many students need. These positive volunteer–student relationships are one of the most important parts of our work.
After-School Homework Help volunteers are asked to commit to one 90-minute shift a week.
