About the Posse Foundation

The Posse Foundation is a nationally recognized youth leadership development and college access program that identifies, recruits, and trains diverse teams—Posses—of public high school students and sends them to top colleges and universities. To date, more than 9,200 Posse Scholars have been accepted into top-tier institutions of higher education throughout the country. These young people have received more than $1.4 billion in full-tuition leadership scholarships from Posse’s college and university partners and have been agents of positive change on their campuses.

The Posse Foundation launched the Veterans Program in 2012 in an effort to increase the rates at which veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces attend and graduate from selective colleges and universities. The Posse Veterans Program began in partnership with Vassar College and now also counts the University of Chicago, the University of Virginia, and Wesleyan University as partners. Each Posse veteran will attend college as part of a multicultural team—a Posse—of 10 veterans and will receive support prior to matriculating on campus and mentoring once enrolled.

Posse is currently looking for writing coaches for Vassar Posse 7, Wesleyan Posse 6, and UChicago Posse 1 for the Veterans Program Pre-Collegiate Training (PCT) program this summer. PCT begins on July 8th and ends on August 2nd. The writing coach dates vary by Posse and are outlined below:

Writing Coach Description

The role of the writing coach is unique and special. Compared to other volunteer opportunities at Posse, the writing coach enjoys the benefit of working very closely with Posse Scholars as a group and individually. In turn, Posse Scholars greatly benefit from the expertise, energy and commitment from their writing coaches. Much is expected of writing coaches. Your primary role as a writing coach is to be the expert who teaches the core lessons of good writing during group or individual coaching sessions.

Second, you provide written and verbal feedback for Scholars’ papers. Your feedback should give Scholars a sense of their writing strengths and weaknesses and inspire them to want to be better writers. You also work closely with Posse staff, particularly with trainers, to keep the writing sessions dynamic, fun and useful. To keep the sessions engaging, it is important that you understand the different and complementary aspects of teaching and facilitating and learn how each play a vital role in the implementation of the writing program.

To be an effective writing coach, it’s important that you understand the philosophy of the Pre-Collegiate Training program. The Pre-Collegiate training program embraces the belief that all students go through their own individual processes as they prepare to go to college. Our training is meant to help students start thinking about aspects of their identity, academic goals, personal leadership, and other factors that shape their development into college students. We do not directly or intentionally influence their views on race, class, culture, religion, gender, sexuality, etc., because we want Scholars to develop their own views through their own experiences. We do, however, challenge Scholars to think critically about their own perspectives and the perspectives of others. As a writing coach, you teach Scholars how to translate their views into good writing.

Detailed responsibilities include:

  • Co-facilitating four (4) three-hour workshops with a Posse trainer for ten (10) Scholars this coming summer (PCT begins July 8th and ends August 2nd)
  • Holding 1:1 meetings with Scholars on during the last two weeks of PCT to review their writing and discuss areas of improvement
  • Attending a training session in advance of Pre-Collegiate Training (dates and times TBD)
  • Following the writing curriculum which is designed to address the expectations of college-level writing
  • Providing thoughtful, constructive, and timely feedback to Scholars on their writing
  • Meeting with Posse staff and other writing coaches to plan each writing workshop
  •  Making sure the writing sessions are effective for all Scholars, regardless of the students’ writing expertise
  • Teaching Scholars to find their own unique voices and points of view
  •   Collaborating and troubleshooting with trainers, the program director, the director, and/or the program coordinator
  • Using your experiences, strengths, and resources to help prepare your assigned Scholars for their first year in college
