First Unitarian Church of Chicago in Hyde Park is looking for some committed volunteers to help a few Sundays a month in our religious education programs Sundays from 9:45-11:15.
Out program relies 100% on volunteers and we need you!
The lessons and all materials are prepared and provided for you.
We currently have 3 age groups that you may choose to work with:
lower elementary, upper elementary, and a grade 6-9 youth group.
Training, on site supervision, and classroom support will be directly provided by an experienced, licensed teacher. We aim to have two adults in every class room at all times.
All you need to do is:
- read the lesson ahead of time
- be a part of something wonderful
A background check is required before you may begin.
Religious education for children and youth at First Unitarian is based on the idea that children and youth learn and grow in a pluralistic environment that celebrates spirituality. Unitarian Universalists do not have a creed and we believe there is no single answer to religious questions for anyone. We encourage children, youth, and adults to discover what gives meaning to their lives by exploring many topics from world religions to UU history and beyond.
If you are Unitarian or you know already about who we are and what we believe, that's is great, but that is not required. So long as you respect the beliefs of all and know that in this place teachers are not to impress their own beliefs on others, we welcome you.
Some lessons may include service work or social justice. Some lessons ask youth to think about a higher being such as God, Jesus, Buddha, etc and think about what speaks to them. Otherwise, you could be teaching anything from "what is love," to “how is Harry Potter related to spirituality?" to "do you agree with the Simpsons thoughts on the soul?"
Sound like fun? We think so. Come check us out.
